Pregnancy

Chiropractic care is safe during pregnancy and can help reduce pregnancy discomfort, as well as help the woman experience a positive delivery and recovery. Although the changes women experience from pregnancy are natural, a little extra help is sometimes needed to cope with the dramatic changes in their bodies.

One of the most noticeable changes to a woman over the course of a nine month pregnancy is to her musculoskeletal system. Because the baby lies forward in the woman's body, her center of gravity changes, and her spine (notably her low back) alters its position to accommodate this added weight. This shift of center of gravity puts significant stress on the low back and pelvis. In addition, pregnant women experience hormonal changes which loosen the ligaments of not only the structures within the abdomen, but the of the spine and pelvis as well. This change can exacerbate the already over-stressed low back by further reducing its overall stability.

Approximately half of all pregnant women will experience lower back pain at some point in their pregnancies, especially later in pregnancy when the baby’s head is downward and can irritate the sciatic nerve. These stresses and strains can be relieved with regular chiropractic care.
But the benefits of chiropractic care can extend beyond pregnancy, into labor and recovery. Chiropractic care can also help you after delivery, and we can care for and treat any neuromusculoskeletal symptoms you experience after birth. After labor and delivery, loosened ligaments slowly return to normal over the course of eight weeks, so prompt chiropractic care is essential.
